How to sterilize a taper?

my friend says he'll let me borrow his 2mm stretcher/taper thing to get me started but obviously I dont want it to get infected and stuff so how could I go about sterilizing it? Also I wear alot of heavy earings and stuff, so will it mean it's likely to less hurt, 'cus i am a bit of a wimp :L
