Can you give me advice on buying a power backup system for my computer?

I have a Dell 17" Laptop and a DSL Modem I want to backup in case of power failure and to protect from power surges and brown outs. Keeping the power supply uninterrupted is VERY important to me as I do online Forex trading. Anyone have any better ideas?
